PARKINSON SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. Main symptoms include limbs tremor, rigidity, slowing of movement and postural instability.

Parkinson's disease is more common in older male people, and most cases occur between the age of 50 and 60. There are around five million people diagnosed PD in the world every year.

TREMOR
Tremor is the most well-known and obvious symptom in Parkinson's disease. Though around 30% of individuals do not have tremor at PD onset. It will be developed as the disease progresses and shows as rest tremor: unilateral or bilateral arms tremors beyond patient's control. A feature is pill-rolling, the tendency of the index finger to get into contact with the thumb, and get into a circular movement. Rest tremor shows maximal when the limb is at rest, disappearing with voluntary movement and sleep.

RIGIDITY
Rigidity is resistance and stiffness to limb movement caused by excessive and continuous contraction of muscles.

BRADYKINESIA
Bradykinesia (slowness of movement) is associated with difficulties of movement, from decreased facial expression to performance of sequential and simultaneous movement is obstructed.

ACUPUNCTURE FOR PARKINSON'S DISEASE
Parkinson's disease particularly affects brain areas; including the thalamus, putamen, and the supplementary motor area. Acupuncture helps reactivate certain brain centers and stimulates better neural responses in the brain regions: the basal ganglia, putamen, thalamus, caudate, and substantial nigra - all associated with Parkinson's disease.

HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Acupuncture facilitates the circulation of blood for healing and proper functioning of the brain. It removes obstacles of brain function by regulating the energy, and removes hindrances in neurological pathways from the brain to the rest of the body (i.e. opening of the spine and base of the skull). It reduces inflammation, promotes proper brain function and chemistry levels, and enhances range of motion in muscles and joints.

WHAT THE PATIENTS CAN DO
Parkinson's disease is a kind of chronic disease. Acupuncture treatment helps to delay the progression of the disease and reduces the symptoms. A relatively long time of therapy is required to treat Parkinson's disease. Patients should also pay more attention on their daily living habit and diet, if the treatment should go simultaneously with drugs for better result.
