ACUPUNCTURE FOR LABOUR PREPARATION
In the old days it was all about enemas and shaving to prepare us for the onset of labour. Very often we would even be in labour and find ourselves having to put up with more discomfort and distress.
Luckily nowadays things are very different and women are helped and assisted towards a birth process that is as calm, controlled and whilst not totally pain-free, at least pain-managed. Much has been said recently about the benefits of using acupuncture for labour preparation. We are not talking inductions here but more in the region of getting the body into the right condition to enter labour in the best way possible. Going into labour when you are feeling tense, scared and downright 'not ready' can be alarming and add to the uneasiness that you are bound to feel a little of at this time. From the opposite side of the spectrum, if you are comfortable, feeling at ease and in control, the whole process can be managed in a much more pro-active way.
Way back in the 1970's a study carried out in the USA concluded that the use of acupuncture for labour preparation was very much a good thing to do and that often the labour period could even be lessened.
Knowing that acupuncture is a painless and in fact relaxing process, it certainly makes good sense. When the whole body is in tune and functioning as it should be, labour can be entered into as a totally natural process with the pain levels controlled. After all, if practiced breathing can help you find your way through each contraction whilst feeling in control and much calmer; imagine how acupuncture can add to this as an overall positive part of the process.
